Activities Suggestions:

  • Hiking- Explore the hills and shorelines of the North Shore’s Superior Hiking Trail.
  • Waterfalls- Visit the famed High Falls in Grand Portage or the Middle Falls on the Gooseberry River, located at the nearby Gooseberry Falls State Park.
  • Skiing and Snowshoeing-Hit the Slopes at Lutsen Mountain or strap on some snowshoes and explore the wilderness.
  • Snowmobiling- Take in the scenery and ride the trails along the North Shore (jump on the trail 4 miles away at the Holiday station in Tofte, we offer limited snowmobile trailer parking).
  • Fishing- Cast for bass, trout, and walleye on Lake Superior or one of the many inland lakes on the North Shore.
  • Sightseeing- Visit the Split Rock Lighthouse on the way the Cliff Dweller, or visit the harbor town of Grand Marais for some local flavor and unique shopping.
  • Biking, Running, Walking- Jump on the Gitchi-Gami paved bike trail right in front of the hotel and enjoy miles of scenic biking, walking or running.
  • Take Classes- check out North House Folk School for classes in felting, cooking, silversmithing, knitting, etc.
  • Fall Colors Peeping- Fall colors explode on the North Shore. Take a scenic drive on the Honeymoon Trail, the Grade, or Oberg Mountain Trail and take in the most dramatic views of the forest ablaze with color.
  • Ride the Alpine Slide- fun for kids and grownups, this high thrill ride on top of Lutsen Mountains is sure to be a hit for everyone involved.
  • Take the Gondola Ride- Also on the Lutsen Mountain, this scenic ride is not to be missed. The gondola will take you high up the mountain where you can enjoy the view form one of the most iconic lookouts in the area, hike the nearby trails, and then enjoy a pint of cold beer at the Summit Chalet.
  • Dine Around- Don’t miss the local landmark, the Cascade Restaurant and Pub, for wholesome and tasty breakfast, lunch and dinner (10% discount for Cliff Dweller guests). Fika Coffee offers a delicious, locally roasted cup of joe, while Voyageur Brewing serves the best local beer! Angry Trout Café and Fisherman’s Daughter are two local institutions for delicious fish, while The Strand at Lutsen Resort and Bluefin Grille at the Bluefin Bay Resort provide a more refined, high-end dining experience.
  • Find some Live Music- Be it at Cascade Restaurant and Pub over dinner, at Up Yonder for a bar crowd, or at Papa Charlie’s for late night performance, live music is usually playing somewhere in the area.
