Year-Round Backcountry: 5 Essential Superior Hiking Trails

There is no shortage of phenomenal hiking trails on the North Shore. Because of that, it can be hard to know which ones to pursue. The Team at Cascade Lodge has made a list to help visitors and locals alike find the Superior hiking trail that fits them the best.

1. Bean & Bear Lakes Trail

Bean & Bear Lakes Trail features big hills, stellar views, and many options to hike, including a loop, a there-and-back, or a point-to-point trail. This hike is quite strenuous, due to the steep, rocky nature of the trail. That being said, it's hard to imagine a more spellbinding place to enjoy a picnic than secluded Bean Lake.

2. Cascade River Falls

The Cascade River Falls Trail is a half-mile loop, making it the perfect mini-hike that’s ideal for families. Some highlights of this year-round trail include cascades and waterfalls, tiny wildflowers, and its convenient location on-site at Cascade Lodge.

3. Gooseberry Falls State Park

This popular North Shore park features stunning waterfalls, picturesque overlooks, and great trout fishing. With 20 miles of hiking trails, Gooseberry Falls State Park is perfect for hikers of every experience level. A stroll down to Lake Superior's edge, away from the droves of tourists, will do you good.

4. Oberg Mountain Trail

Make sure to check out one of the most popular hikes on the shore: Oberg Mountain Trail. Enjoy unobstructed views of Lake Superior, ample picnicking space, and backcountry lake vistas.

5. Split Rock River Cascades

The Split Rock River Cascades hike, part of the Superior Hiking Trail, can be moderate to difficult based on elevation, length, and trail quality. This trail provides cliff-side views of the river’s cascades.
