April 18th, 2024

Embarking on a journey to explore the hidden waterfalls of Minnesota's North Shore is an adventure for the sake of tranquility. While these cascades might not be a secret to everyone, they are either newly accessible or often overlooked.  Tucked away in the lush wilderness, these cascading gems offer a serene escape from the everyday hustle and bustle. Here are three enchanting waterfalls you can discover near Cliff Dweller, each offering its own unique allure.

  1. Onion River's Small Peaceful Cascades: Just a stone's throw away from Cliff Dweller at the Ray Berglund State Wayside, the Onion River's cascades are a hidden jewel. The gentle flow of water creates a harmonious symphony as it dances over the rocks, enveloped by the verdant canopy of the forest. This tranquil spot is perfect for those seeking a quiet moment with nature. One of the few waterfalls in the area that is easily accessible from roadside parking, make sure you pull off when you see the sign on the inland side for Ray Berglund State Wayside. Or, if you are staying at Cliff Dweller, take a short walk up he Gitchi Gami Trail out your door!
  2. Waterfall View from New Bridge South of Grand Marais on the Gitchi Gami Trail: A recently revealed spectacle awaits along the Gitchi Gami trail, nestled between Cut Face and Grand Marais. This waterfall can be seen from an aerial view on the new bridge constructed in 2022. Be sure to stop on the bump outs of the new suspension bridge as you bike or hike by. Stop at the Cascade Pub & Restaurant on your way up, for a pint and our delicious kale-based Cobb Salad!
  3. Temperance River's Hidden Falls: Perhaps the best known of our favorite falls, Temperance River's Falls are not to be missed. The middle of the three falls here is referred to as the Hidden Falls at Temperance River! Accessible via parking right off Highway 61 is a scenic trail that meanders through the lush, evergreen forests, up to the falls with a spectacular display of nature's power and elegance. The river, known for its dramatic gorges and rushing waters, culminates in a breathtaking waterfall that plunges into a serene pool, creating a mesmerizing spectacle for all who visit.

When planning your waterfall adventure, remember a few tips to make your experience as magical as the destinations themselves. Firstly, wear comfortable and sturdy footwear for uneven terrain. Bring along a camera to capture the cascading beauty, but also take time to immerse yourself in the moment, letting the soothing sounds of the falls wash over you. Lastly, always respect the natural environment by following trails and leaving no trace behind.

Visiting these three hidden waterfalls along Minnesota's North Shore is not just a journey through nature, but a journey into a world of peace and natural splendor. Whether you're seeking solitude, a romantic getaway, or a family adventure, these waterfalls offer an experience that resonates with the soul, reminding us of the simple, unadorned beauty of the natural world.
